About Tai Chi Practice:

The Yang style taught by Arthur Barron is the most popular and widespread version of Tai Chi.  It is a complex martial art with many levels, practiced most often for its cultivation of inner strength, calming effects, health benefits, and graceful choreography.  However, with good physical conditioning, and dedicated practice, its close fighting martial aspects can also be applied.  The core training involves a slow sequence of movements emphasizing a straight spine, abdominal breathing, and a natural range of motion.  Accurate, repeated practice of the routine is known to improve posture, boost circulation throughout the body, and improve flexibility in joints. Tai Chi focuses on relaxation through slow repetitive movements rather than muscle contraction. That makes the exercise less stressful and more relaxing than other martial arts styles.

Tai Chi can be practiced for self-defense, for its aesthetic appeal, and for those who are more interested in its benefits to physical and mental health. Researchers have found that Tai Chi practice has favorable effects on the promotion of balance control, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Tai Chi’s low impact movements can burn more calories than surfing and nearly as many as downhill skiing.

Longevity Tai Chi appeals to health-conscious people who enjoy and benefit both in body and in mind from the gentle to vigorous exercises, subtle self-defense techniques, mind-body rejuvenation methods, and movement challenges.

Tai Chi or as known in China as Taijiquan is derived from the Taiji symbol, commonly known in the West as the “yin-yang” diagram.  The yin-yang philosophy of balance is a primary goal of Tai Chi training, expressed as “The soft and the pliable will defeat the hard and strong.” (Lao Tzu)
